The 60’s bags are back

The 1960s are renowned for being a decade of fashion freedom for women, as the constrictive post-war styles of the 1950s were replaced with vibrant colors and a more futuristic aesthetic. Designers like Paco Rabanne and Coureges, as well as celebrities like Twiggy and Jackie Kennedy, may come to mind when we think of the 1960s. Twiggy was the modern, futuristic icon of 1960s fashion, and Jackie Kennedy typified the decade's girgly girls. The 1960s were characterized by two distinct fashion eras.

Even though I was not alive when Pucci revolutionized fashion or Twiggy graced magazine covers, there are many aspects of this era that I adore and that still influence my sense of style today.

In this decade, women began to carry bags not out of need but rather as a statement piece for their personal style. The traditional square bag, the pouch bag, the frame bag, as well as bags made of croc, vinyl, straw, and plastic, were the bags of the decade.

Famous bags from the 60's that have made a comeback and that are considered the "it bags" of today:

GUCCI'S Jackie

The Jackie bag experienced a significant comeback, becoming one of today's IT BAGS. Originally created in 1958 under the designation G 1907, this hobo bag was given its current name in 1961 after being frequently spotted on Jacqueline Onassis. If you want to add a timeless bag to your wardrobe, this one is a great choice. I really adore the aesthetic the handle gives the bag; it's easy to dress it up or down.

SAINT LAURENT'S Hobo shoulder bag

Anthony Vaccarello, the brand's artistic director, included his favorite musical or film allusions into each Saint Laurent creation. For this particular model, it appears that Agnès Varda's legendary classic Cléo from 5 to 7 served as inspiration. Although this bag was introduced in 2021, its minimalist and compact design, as well as its crocodile leather, which was one of the most popular materials for bags of the 1960s decade, give it a 60s and 70s vibe.

Because of its affordability and adaptability, I believe this bag to be one of the BEST OPTIONS for anyone buying their first designer bag.

LOUIS VUITTON'S Papillon bag

The Papillon bag was designed by Henri Racamier, the husband of Louis Vuitton's great-granddaughter. He launched the bag in 1966 and has been popular ever since. It was initially created to make a smaller version of the famous Speedy bag.

Louis Vuitton continues to sell the papillon in a variety of forms, and the mini version gained even more popularity with the trend of mini bags. The LV print is classic, and I adore how this purse complements any look.

PACO RABNNE'S bag iconic 1969

Paco Rabanne reinterpreted this protective sheet of scale-like discs as a small bag in the style of Marcel Duchamp's ready-mades. He modified toilet flush chain for the straps. With just a pair of pliers, the bag manifested as an innovative statement that simultaneously redefined classic savoir-faire techniques and embodied the brand's use of avant-garde fashion materials. And despite the absence of a logo, the bag became recognizable and coveted-partly owing to Françoise Hardy and Brigitte Bardot who appear in photographs carrying it through daily life.

DIOR'S monogram duffle bag

The Dior Oblique pattern, which gets its name from a collection that Christian Dior designed for Fall/Winter 1950–1951, has been synonymous with the French fashion brand over the course of its 52-year history. Marc Bohan, who served as design director from 1961 until 1989, created it in 1967. The jet set era was in full swing in the 1960s, which contributed to the antique duffle bag's popularity. Even now, people still love this bag a lot! It looks great with a vintage trench coat, and I think it's the ideal bag for traveling in style.

HERMÈS constance bag

The bag was named after Catherine Chaillet's newborn daughter Constance and was created by Hermès' in-house designer at the beginning of the 1960s in 1959. According to rumors, Constance was born on the same day the first bag was finished. One of the most popular purses available now that will never go out of style is still being sold in Hermès stores.
